Overheard: Grace

Grace [with a sweet, sad little voice]: Mom, when I grow up, I'm gonna miss you.

Me: I'll miss you, too, sweetheart.

Grace: But it's a good thing I'm gonna stay a little girl for for a very long time!

Sigh...It won't be as long as you think...

Grace: OK, Mom, here's our deal. As long as I'm little, you won't be old.

Well, I was wondering what the deal was. Now I know.

Grace [wistfully, and totally serious]: I wish...I wish... [pauses] I wish I was a mom 'cause then I'd have a baby by now!


Ummm...what happened to our deal? And might I remind you that you are 4 years old?!

Grace: Mom, when I'm as old as you, you'll be old.

She's a little too matter-of-fact with this age stuff.

Grace: I'm gonna stop doin' things like me and start doin' things like you. 'Cause I wanna do things like grown-ups.

Fortunately, she followed this up with examples of how she would be more obedient; most of them centered on going to sleep quickly when it's bedtime or taking a nap (because she only naps in the car...usually when I don't want her to take a nap, of course). Still, this is a perfect example of why there is at least one person in our circle of friends who refers to her as "The Precocious One."

Grace [putting together an alphabet puzzle, where the pieces go horizontally in alphabetical order]: Hmmm...that's funny. Where does the "R" go?

Me: Say the alphabet. Then you'll find it. [singing] LMNO...

Grace [singing quickly through the rest of the letters, and apparently not listening closely enough to herself]: PQRSTUVWXY&Z. Hey! There's no "R" in the alphabet!

Maybe she'll stay little just a little while longer...

The consignment sale

Most of my friends know I've been pricing things like mad (and begging for clothes hangers on Facebook) in preparation for a consignment sale last weekend. Would you like to see before and after shots?

There was also the travel playpen I forgot to price. I remembered that I had not priced it as I was trying to load the playpen into the van. Ugh. There was no tag for it...but there was also no room in the van for it anyway. As it was, Josiah carried a little riding toy (not even pictured above) in his lap!

After...





I sold a little over half of what I consigned, including several homeschooling books! Since I still have plenty to consign, I'll be retagging everything for another consignment sale that is coming up mid-September. I'll continue going through boxes in the attic (and the kids' toys) to find more things to price. And this time I'll remember that playpen...

You Capture: Mornings

Grace ran over to my side of the bed and began climbing over me. I asked her, "What are you doing?" She ever-so-briefly stopped climbing to reply, "You know what I'm doing!"

It was time for the Baby Deer Game.

Grace gave her instructions: "Pretend you wish you had a baby deer and you see this bush shaking."


OK..."Oh, how I wish I had a baby deer! Why is this bush shaking? Could it be a baby deer?"


It's a little hard to get excited about a shaking
pillowbush so early in the morning, but she sure is cute. Plus, after I find my baby deer, she usually does a silly little deer dance for me after she snuggles with me. Trust me...the baby deer dance does not translate well in photos. I tried.

You Capture: Outside

This week has been crazy since we are still getting in the routine of school and I haven't been taking as many pictures as usual. In fact, I almost had only a photo of a chipmunk to share.


The kids (Josiah and Grace, at least) love that chipmunk. We've lived here for nearly 11 years and these last few weeks have been the only time we've ever had a chipmunk in our yard. They even attempted to wake up Daddy to show him the chipmunk one morning.

He valiantly resisted their efforts...and I don't blame him one bit.

But, anyway, we did manage to spend some time outside enjoying this slightly cooler weather we've had. And I remembered to take some pictures to share.

I know this is blurry, but I just love his expression. He usually either doesn't smile for me or makes a goofy face.
