Shapes

Grace (6) said this glass ball was just asking to be touched!
We went on a dolphin boat tour--it was our first time!  We were eager to see the shapes of dolphins in the water, and the dolphins cooperated.

Paint

During the boat ride, the captains told us that these were special pelicans...painter pelicans.  Can you guess why?  ;)

She loves chicken

When Chick-fil-A had their Cow Appreciation Day two weeks ago, we went.  It was our first time dressing up for free food, and the humiliation it was worth it!  Grace (6) wanted to make a sign to hold:

Josiah was away at camp, so he missed it.  He was surprisingly disappointed, and he's already looking forward to the next Cow Appreciation Day.

Have you ever gone to Chick-fil-A during Cow Appreciation Day dressed as a cow?  :)

Fourth of July

I thought I would share a little recap of our July 4th celebration...while it's still July.  ;)

We took a little trip to a nearby town where they were having festivities in the square...

and found a place where we had good view of the grounds and the people going by

including the political action

without being in the middle of the big crowd.

We waited for the sun to set.  Some were more content

Grace (6)

than others.

Robert (15)

Finally...the sun set...

the fireworks began...

and we realized we had picked a truly horrible spot to watch the fireworks.

There was a bus and trees between us and the fireworks

and we would have had better seats if we had tailgated in the parking lot.

Yes, this shot was from the parking lot.  We headed back to our van during a lull in the fireworks, and the finale had begun at this point.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

This week's prompts for Scavenger Hunt Sunday are:
  • Time together
  • Wrapped
  • Duplicated
  • Tell me a story
  • Love or couple

Time together

Josiah (10) and Grace (6) spend a lot of time together, and usually they are knee-deep in imaginative play.  I overheard them talking about a piggy bank...only this was no ordinary piggy bank.  This was Wish Piggy; if Grace put coins in, she could wish for Josiah to be various animals.

These "animals" include such things a pony, a lion, a gorilla, a griffin, and a wahga-wahga. Each of the imaginary animals have their own individual sounds they make.  I'm not quite sure how Josiah keeps them straight, but he does.  (Probably due to constant usage of the sounds...)

Wrapped

These are mice that Jason and I were forced to make encouraged by Grace to make, and they are wrapped in rags because Grace said, "Mice should never be naked." Then she picked out the rags for us, and wrapped the mice.  I think she was afraid we would do it the wrong way.

She has issues.

Duplicated

Grace duplicated the position of the arms of the huge stuffed rabbit that was beside her while she was sleeping.

But who could duplicate the stunning beauty that God placed all around us?

Lovely sunset, with clouds that give clues about the weather

We can only capture bits and pieces, and do our best to imitate the beauty surrounding us, through our art...

Tell me a story

I had the chance to hear Matt Kennon perform recently.  You may have heard of him--he's the country music singer/songwriter of The Call, That's Love, and, more recently,  You Had to Pick On Me.  (Click on the links to watch his YouTube videos.)  He tells his story through his music...

and he sang some of these songs at his parents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

Josiah's Camp Experience

Josiah (10) went to camp--a sleep-away camp, at that--for the first time this summer.  We picked him up early one Saturday morning after a very, very, very quiet week.

Seriously, Grace (6) even began to talk quietly by mid-week.  Apparently this little girl with a big voice has just been trying to talk over her big brother all this time.  Who knew?

We were all wondering how Grace would fare without her best friend for a whole week.  She did really well, and surprised us all--even herself.  She commented a couple of times, "You know, I'm not even sad that Josiah's not here.  I haven't even cried once."  This was usually followed closely by, "Who is my next play date with?"  (Yes, we had a few of those.)  Still, she was looking forward to picking up Josiah, even if it meant getting up when it was still dark to ride with me to the camp.

We found our camper, looking like he hadn't slept all week...

Grace was ecstatic to see her brother again!

And he walked us to his dorm to get his bags so we could load them in our van.

The boys' dorm
We began heading back to where the campers would be dismissed

Sleepy girl!
and I asked Josiah if he'd like to take any pictures with my camera since his camera malfunctioned the day before he left for camp.  I thought maybe he'd like to take pictures of his friends--old and new--or maybe camp counselors, or something along those lines.

No, he wanted to take pictures of some awesome sand castles he and his friends made.

OK...

After the campers were dismissed, Josiah began pointing out various things, like the canteen area.  I believe this was one of his favorite times, due to the snack food as well as the proximity to the sand.

He said this was where "they tried to get as many stains on our clothes as possible" with fun but messy activities.

And he said this was where his team found out what an awesome kickball player he is.

My son is a lot of things; modest is not one of them.

I asked Josiah if he had fun, and he said "no," quickly adding that they had to take 3 hour naps every day, it took 3 hours for everyone to eat lunch and supper, and they only got to swim for 30 minutes a day.

He also said that he didn't see a clock the entire week. His sense of time, as you can imagine, was a bit off.

His sense of fun was off, too, seeing as we had finally gotten a puppy and, in his mind, promptly shipped him off to camp.  I think he'll be ready to go back next summer!

Wordless Wednesday: Sleep

Bono, our new puppy, finds odd places to sleep...like under the kitchen table, with his head wedged underneath a chair. (You can click on those two links to see...um...the whole puppy.)

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

The photography prompts for this week are
  • Water
  • Petal
  • Fresh
  • Eight
  • Calm
Water

Grace enjoyed some fun in the water at a friend's pool last week.  Aren't these cool floats?  The water gun is built in, and shoots pool water with no need to stop and "reload"!

Petal

This little guy apparently loves these petals, because he hasn't left. Ever.

Fresh

Finally!  We have fresh cucumbers from our little garden...two, to be exact.

Eight

There are eight books in the Little House on the Prairie series, not counting Farmer Boy.  Grace (6) has been reading them sequentially, and is currently on Little Town on the Prairie as well as Farmer Boy.  She's a very good reader!   So far, her favorite Laura Ingalls Wilder book is Farmer Boy.  That was Josiah's favorite, too, probably because of all the food that is mentioned!  ;)

Calm

Ahhh...a peaceful-looking sunset.   Need I say more?

Still, this remains my favorite calm photo...
